Gravity’s studio is a 24-bit digital studio centered around a Yamaha 02/R digital mixer, a long-time standard in audio-post studios. All tracking is done to a PowerMac G4 in Digital Performer 4.0 software using Mark of the Unicorn interfaces. This gives us 24 discrete tracks at mixdown, with a virtually limitless number of ‘virtual’ audio tracks and synchronized MIDI tracks. All recorded audio is non-linear (i.e., Pro-Tools) for efficient editing.

Our studio is equipped with several high level synthesizers, samplers and effects processors that provide us with a great variety of sounds to chose from in instrumentation. Our custom built guitars and Line6 Pods enable us to vary our stringed instrument tone to suit each project perfectly.

At mixdown, most processing is done in the computer, using the industry-standard Waves Platinum plug-ins (although we still love our outboard Lexicon reverbs). The studio can be slaved to LTC or synched to DV for post-scoring, and is clocked by a dedicated Lucid word clock generator for low clock jitter.

Basically what all of this tech talk boils down to is that our equipment sounds great and gives us a lot of flexibility in what we can produce without leaving the office. For those projects that require a bit more, however, we have strong relationships with regional large-scale recording studios that enable us to do anything our clients can request (like tracking a 16-piece string ensemble).

We’re expanding our studio even as this is going online… we’ll let you know on the front page when the new tracking room is finished.
